Lab work on woollies has officially begun! Today I finally got to take the samples out of the SPE cartridges they've been stored in. The cartridges are used to absorb extracted hormones in the field and have the added benefit of making the samples both more stable and not require a CDC permit. My samples have been languishing in the lab freezer since I got back from the field in June. Eluting the samples went well. (I think. It's hard to tell when you haven't run any assays on them yet). The basic principle is you drip methanol through the SPE cartridges and catch the pee colored liquid that filters out. It's strange looking at these tiny vials of liquid which represent a whole month of work and yet barely fill half a freezer box. They hopefully hold the answers to a lot of interesting questions.
